The Ultimate CBD Edibles, Gummies & Snacks Guide In The UK

14th January 2021

When you think of edibles, often an image of that short weekend break to Amsterdam comes to mind and the promise you made to yourself that you would never eat a brownie ever again. The effects of high-inducing cannabis brownies can leave a bad taste in your mouth but thankfully CBD edibles are the complete opposite of ‘those’ edibles.

CBD edibles are non-intoxicating. So you can have one bite or a full tray of delicious brownies, gummies, or cakes. Either way, it's impossible to induce the “high” associated with THC-rich cannabis edibles.

This article brings you through what CBD edibles are and some delicious recipes that'll make your mouth water.

A testament to the growing popularity of cannabidiol oil in the UK is both the increasing number of specialised stores and cafes opening nationwide, as well as the increasing variety of ways that this potent cannabis compound can now be consumed.

Edibles, in particular, is a delicious and convenient way of getting CBD into your system.

CBD Edibles – What Are They & What Do They Do?

Edibles are everyday foods and drinks that have been infused with CBD oil. The most common form of CBD edible available is gummy bears. But with increasing popularity comes ingenuity and now you can find all manner of infused food and drink on the market.

Chocolate and sweets to beer, wine, and even hummus– the list is ever-growing.

The strength of edibles varies, leaving something to suit every person's unique endocannabinoid system. Dosages can start as low as 2 mg for one gummy bear all the way up to a several hundred-milligram chocolate bar.

With edibles, you get precise dosing so you can be confident of the exact amount of cannabidiol you are taking. They are ideal for those looking to microdose this potent compound as dosages start small.

When you eat or drink edibles, the body takes longer to metabolise the CBD, producing longer-lasting effects.

Varieties of CBD edibles

Demand breeds innovation and thanks to this, we have a plethora of CBD edibles to choose from. All you have to do is choose one based on availability and your preferences

CBD Gummies

CBD gummies are as the name suggests, gummies infused with CBDs. Coming in a wide array of shapes such as gummy bears, cubes and spheres, they are quite fun to consume thanks to their gelatinous composition. They also have a long shelf life due to their jelly structure.

CBD Hard Candies

For those who would like to relish their candy for longer times, hard candies can be their go-to CBD edible. These candies can also come in the form of mints and many other flavours.

CBD Baked Goods And Protein Bars

CBD baked goods have risen in popularity over the past few decades. It is one of the easiest forms to consume CBD. Unlike gummies and candies, they are easy to produce. People have even started looking for recipes online to infuse CBD with their home-baked foods.

Owing to its anti-inflammatory benefits, CBD based protein bars and sports bars are also fueling the rage. They turn to be great supplements to increase post-workout-caloric intake.

CBD Lollipops

If you desire to remain discreet from CBD detractors then CBD lollipops are the way to go. The social stigma surrounding CBDs makes it inconvenient to vape and smoke them. CBD lollipops are a great workaround to casually enjoy them.

They also taste better than the natural earthy CBD oil which is regarded as off-putting.

Moreover, their dosages are evident in the package itself. Hence, you need not concern yourself with measuring your consumption.

CBD Coffee

On paper, CBD and coffee may not seem a happy marriage. One is used to give a fresh jolt of energy and the other spreads a warm blanket of therapeutic soothing benefits. However, both work together to induce a heightened strength of concentration, alertness and productivity.

Also, both CBD and coffee are rich in antioxidants. Harnessing these compounds,  your body wife itself clean off free radicals that can harm your cells.

Bioavailability of CBD Edibles

Bioavailability of a compound is the rate and the extent to which it gets absorbed into the bloodstream. It is important to understand the bioavailability of CBD so that you can adjust dosages and ensure the appropriate amount ends up in your system.

Users are always on the hunt to find the best way to consume CBD and enjoy the therapeutic agent at different rates. That's why people take CBD in different ways. That's where CBD's bioavailability come into play as well.

CBD edibles are consumed orally technically called as oral ingestion. The bioavailability of CBD when taken through your mouth, is between 10 % – 20%.

The reason behind this is that CBD has to first pass through your digestive system, enter into your bloodstream and then reach the endocannabinoid system. Firstly, the process can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours. Secondly, most of the CBD gets lost in the digestive tract and the liver.

What is left is, 10% to 20% of the originally ingested CBD.

Resultantly, while consuming CBD edibles you will have to wait longer for the relief you anticipate.

So How Long Do CBD Edibles Take To Work?

Now that we have established the bioavailability of CBD, it would be easy to learn how fast CBD edibles work.  Depending on a person's metabolism, height and weight, lifestyle and diet, CBD can take effect from anytime between 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Although there isn't any evidence to point out the side effects of overdosing on CBD we don't recommend taking it large quantities.

Are They Legal in the UK?

Yes. CBD edibles are legal in the UK as long the active ingredient comes from a cannabis plant that contains less than 0.2% THC, and that no medicinal claims are made on the packaging or marketing of said products. The same goes for tinctures, creams, capsules, etc.

CBD – What Are the Benefits

Following clinical trials, UK group ‘GW pharmaceuticals’ received FDA approval to market CBD in the United States using the brand name ‘Epidiolex’ to treat seizures in people with epilepsy.

CBD has also been shown in numerous double-blind placebo-controlled studies as well as in vivo and in vitro studies for having the potential to be:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-anxiety
  • Anti-catabolic properties
  • Pain relief
  • Aid Sleep
  • Anti-psychosis
  • Anti-depressant
  • Combat addiction
  • Skin treatment
  • Anti-nausea

Benefits of These Yummy Gummies

Now that we have established the benefits of CBD, let us see what sets CBD edibles apart from other forms

The Benefits Last Longer

CBD edibles take longer to metabolise. This means that the resultant relief is long-lasting when compared to other means. The more fast and furious means such as CBD vapes and smokes offer faster relief.

Here, CBD is infused into candies and gummies. They'd be digested the same way food goes down. Hence, CBD edibles can anywhere as long as 2-4 hours.

Easy to Make

Particularly, if you are a baking enthusiast, you can infuse CBD into the pastries you make. They give you the required boost in mood and antioxidants, seamlessly supplementing with the sugary treat you prepare.

CBD crystals, oil tinctures are available online and in stores which you can add to cooked and baked goods.

Easy to Dose

One scarily annoying disposition of CBD products is the dosage. The smoky and vapour counterparts plague users with this difficulty- it becomes hard to determine how much CBD we are taking in each time.

CBD edibles come pre-dosed making it easier to calculate the rate at which we consume CBD.

Discreet to Use

Some methods to consume CBD can be frowned upon. Intravenous intake, for its high bioavailability, is intrusive and expensive. Vapes cannot be used publicly.

However, no one is going to take you to task for casually chewing a gummy bear or sucking a lollipop. There are no extra accessories such as vape pens and tinctures required as well.

Zero High

CBD is nothing if for its non-psychoactive soothing effect. Generally, CBD is thought to cause a high among users. This never the case.

The high that marijuana users commonly experience is due to the presence of the high-inflicting tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD edibles that contain more than 0.3% of THC in them are banned in the UK.

CBD does endow a mellow mood encouraging positivity and alertness. In addition to this, CBD edibles linger for a longer period helping the body fight anxiety and pain.  However, this is not intoxicating and addictive.

Friendly With Plants

One of the main advantages of CBD is that it can easily combine with plant molecules. Let us tell what this means for you.

For example, take CBD coffee. To manufacture this CBD edible, coffee beans are heated along with CBD so that the latter would percolate into these beans.

This ensures that there is no change in taste resulting in the CBD and coffee team together teeming up with antioxidants.

Minimal Side Effects

CBD edibles, due to their low dosages and bioavailability, makes them with minimum side effects. They serve as an excellent option to treat diseases like epilepsy.

Moreover, the absence of THC makes them non-addictive as well.

So Are There Any Side Effects?

Side effects of consuming CBD edibles is the same as consuming any CDB product. Common effects observed from overdosing on CBD are:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth

Although there is little scientific evidence to support the effects of the overdose, we advise you to stop taking them if you keep feeling any adverse effects.
