What Are CBD Tampons and How Can They Benefit You?

13th May 2020

Let’s be honest, periods aren’t exactly fun. ‘That time of the month’ is notoriously associated with changes in mood, sensitivities and lots of discomfort for us gals.

Most women experience mild pain that can often be relieved with over-the-counter painkillers or a hot water bottle. However, for women suffering from dysmenorrhea, (the medical term for extreme period pain) things are not as easy.

Care for severe period pain is very much lacking. Could CBD tampons be the answer to our monthly prayers?

What Is CBD?

It’s estimated that 1.3 million people in the UK are now using CBD, but what is the hot new supplement? Simply put, CBD is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It’s suggested that the popular chemical compound can treat pain, and no it can’t get you high.

2019 was CBD’s biggest year yet. We saw a huge surge in popularity and no product expanded its market quite like cannabidiol. CBD found its way into lattes, gummies, hair products, hummus and even pet treats.

If you’re wondering why CBD tampons? The answer is that one of CBD’s widely-used benefits is pain relief. In fact, cannabis itself has been used medicinally for thousands of years, first in Asia, then Africa and America. It was finally the Indians who brought it to Jamaica, where it’s earned its famous ‘ganja’ nickname.

(Now back to CBD and periods)

It turns out that CBD and CBD tampons can be pretty effective in treating period pain. This is all down to how CBD reacts within the body. We’re full of cannabinoids receptors and cannabinoids like CBD bind to these, unlocking and altering how our cells function.

This controls everything from our appetite and sleep to pain and inflammation. Lucky for us, some of the body’s receptors are located in the vagina. So, when it comes to periods, CBD tampons may be able to effectively alleviate pain and inflammation.

What Are CBD Tampons?

CBD tampons are a type of suppository infused with CBD. The small cylinder-shaped product is inserted into the vagina, just like a normal tampon. Most are made with a soothing CBD or hemp oil which often softens and melts once inside the body.

Can CBD Treat Period Pain?

How effective could CBD and CBD Tampons really be for treating period pain? When used, CBD reacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS) A.K.A. the body’s receptors. Studies have shown that CBD may then be able to help to reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity.

Whilst the ECS is located throughout the body, it’s pretty prevalent in our reproductive systems. This includes the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, and it could be the reason that CBD tampons are proving so helpful for women. The suppositories could reduce inflammatory response and contractions of the uterus.

Research for CBD and period pain is still in its infant stages so as of yet, there are no specific published research studies. It is helpful however to know that there is well established scientific evidence to support its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

Dr Dani Gordon says that patients taking a high daily dose of CBD for extreme cyclical period pain and PMS have seen results. The cannabinoid medicine expert reported improvements in patients after three months of consistent use – which could be great news for any suffering woman out there.

How Quickly Will CBD Tampons Work?

Responses to CBD tampons can differ between women and this is because each of us has a unique ECS. It’s similar to how everyone responds differently to medications. So what works for one person may differ to another.

“Some people can take one Tylenol, some people need three Advils, people all have different abilities to respond to different drugs,” explained Rosemary Mazanet, a board-certified haematologist, oncologist and chief scientific officer of the medical cannabis company Columbia Care.

As a result, some people may require a higher or lower dose to have the same effect as someone else, Mazanet added.

Fortunately for women who don’t feel as much of as impact from CBD tampons, there’s one more benefit. As CBD can relax the muscles in our pelvic floor, it may be able to reduce any pain felt during sex. After all, it is an anti-inflammatory, and other oils used in products can help soothe and lubricate our lady parts!
