Born out of a group of friends’ passion for handmade fresh pasta, Al Dente triumphantly delivers in all that it sets out to do, simple no faff plates of sumptuously delicious pasta.
Al Dente like its namesake is a perfect way of eating pasta. The site located in Fitzrovia doubles up as a pasta lab or a pastifici for those who speak the lingo. This ‘pasta laboratory’ was incredibly busy the night we visited; the small restaurant was inundated by deliveroo drivers and after work sort looking for their pasta fix.
Perfectly compact, the restaurant is equipped with a large communal high table and bar stools along counters. Continuing with its simplistic and casual approach to dining, draws beneath your table pull out to reveal cutlery and water glasses, genius right?
Boards above the open kitchen reveal a variety of pasta dishes which at Al Dente are quintessentially Roman dishes – with guanciale (a cured pork cheek) and pecorino both heavily featured. Whilst plates are more than enough for one; at more than affordable prices it would be criminal to no double or even triple up (the most expensive pasta is £9.95).
From instagrammable cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper) to popular classics like penne pomodoro there’s something for everyone. No-miss dishes include spaghetti with carbonara which was in true Roman fashion rich and flavoursome. Also good was ravioli pumpkin and pecorino, half-moon pockets of pasta and the green tortelli loaded with mushroom, spinach and ricotta bathed in a buttery truffle sauce.
Dessert comes with three choices, we shared a cannoli: wonderfully crisp and packed with sweet ricotta and a dusting of bitter chocolate. Tiramisu is a must, and is available to go – the perfect companion for your tube journey home.
Al Dente is the perfect pasta destination for anyone not looking to forfeit on quality and also won’t break the bank.
Available throughout summer, Al Dente have also launched aperitivo hour, available Monday to Friday from 16:30 to 18:30. Choose any two of the same cocktail for just £10 per person.
