Candid Magazine’s Fashion & Entertainment Editor, Jeff Conway has been nominated for an Emmy Award, again. That’s right, it’s not the first time and we’re very proud of Jeff for his nomination, which recognises excellence in television.
Jeff Conway is Candid Magazine’s resident expert when it comes to celebrities and entertainment. For nearly a year (and a cycle of several unique hair styles), he’s been amassing filmed studio interviews with some of Hollywood’s biggest directors (La La Land’s Damien Chazelle); hitting the red carpet to talk to icon-status actors (Vince Vaughn, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Chadwick Boseman); talking to talent for Candid Magazine's print and digital platforms (Parker Young, Shazad Latif, Logan Shroyer) and he even came for London Fashion Week Men’s, reporting on spring/summer 2018 collections from the front row.
Based out of Chicago, Jeff Conway is one of the city’s favourite TV hosts and journalists. Starting his journey via an entertainment television series on NBC, Jeff quickly worked his way up to become the sole producer and correspondent of the show. He is a dedicated host and producer for entertainment and fashion content and some of his highlights to date include interviewing Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr., Reese Witherspoon, Jodie Foster, Zac Efron and Halle Berry.
We caught up with Jeff to congratulate him on his nomination, find out more about this year’s ceremony and a certain call to action for Tom Ford.
Candid Magazine's Fashion & Entertainment Editor, Jeff Conway
Hi Jeff, congratulations on being nominated for an Emmy, but this isn’t your first Emmy nomination, is it?
Thank you! No, it is not my first Emmy nomination. I have been nominated in years prior for my producing work, my on-camera contributor work, but never for lead host performance on a television programme. This is definitely the most thrilling nomination for me, by far.
Do you have to put yourself forward, or how does it work?
In order to be even considered for an Emmy nomination, you must submit your best television work from the last year. I created a video compilation of all of my best, favourite interviews with celebrities. I am really proud of my projects from the last year, so I made sure the video did justice to my skills.
Jeff Conway interviews Mark Wahlberg on the red carpet
What it is about celebrity culture that captures your imagination?
I love celebrity culture because we watch these people on most news outlets and they are depicted as these ‘immortals’ almost. I do have such an admiration for their performances, but I also know that at the end of the day, they are just another human. So, I always knew I wanted to speak to these well-known individuals and ask them questions that would make them comfortable enough to put their guard down and really give a human, refreshingly raw response.
How did you get into television and journalism?
I studied Broadcast Journalism at my university, then became a full-time intern right after graduating. I quickly worked my way up the company ladder, proved my value, and have been accelerating on media projects ever since, fortunately.
Is it what you always wanted to do?
Yes. I do take enormous pride in being able to create projects that I love and speak with popular artists that are nearly impossible for most of us to ever reach on this level in everyday life.
Jeff Conway interviews Halle Berry on the red carpet
What has been a standout red-carpet moment for you?
A moment I will never forget just happened back in July, when Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry gave me a kiss on the red carpet – she really loved my surprise birthday gift for her.
You’ve interviewed just about everyone, but if there is one person that you would like to interview that you haven’t yet, who would it be?
I would love to interview actor Tom Hardy. He is such a genius actor and he really takes his time selecting roles. I would love to pick his brain and get him to ‘soften up’ during our chat.
When are this year’s winners announced?
The Emmy Awards will happen on December 2nd in Chicago.
What will you wear to the ceremony?
I haven't decided yet what I will wear. Surely, wearing a very sleek tuxedo is the plan. I have a few local Chicago fashion designer friends that would love to dress me and get the recognition that evening, but I am not rushing to that decision quite yet. If Tom Ford hits me up, I am so in!
