Macau has been rapidly developing at a rate of knots over the last decade to become what is widely regarded as the Las Vegas of the East. Whether that is a welcome development, might be debatable, however, it does mind the establishment of countless exciting hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and shows across the buzzing, vibrant city.
One of the must-visit destinations in the City of Dreams development with their dazzling array of luxury hotels, the largest shoe salon offering in the region and the most famous show in town: The House of Dancing Water, which is the world's largest water-based show. If you want a hotel, where the gambling aspect of the city is pushed to the fore, then The Countdown Hotel is definitely one to consider in the complex.
One of the most striking features of the hotel will be The “Count: Down Clock” by Martin Bass, the award-winning and world-renowned artist who has worked on countless projects with Louis Vuitton and Swarovski. It has been commissioned by the hotel group as a countdown to phase 3 of their developments, which includes the opening of their newest hotel, Morpheus in 2018. They arranged a production team to film 6 actors in real time, paint and wipe away the numbers denoting the hours and minutes of the day.
The rooms themselves all have exceptional views of the Cotai region with state-of-the-art equipment like 42” flat-screen HDTV with plug-and-play technology, iPod docking station and complimentary high-speed internet access. Fine linen and plush bedding is a must at all high-end hotels these days and The Countdown doesn't disappoint on that front. Despite the hedonistic nature of this 24hr city, you can still enjoy a relaxed, comfortable night's sleep as the other guests at the hotel tend to be less raucous and more civilised.
Their 3rd-floor spa will add to this feeling of serenity with a vast array of massages, body treatments and facials. And the best feature is even if this is booked up, they have 2 sister spas at their neighbouring hotels in the City of Dreams complex, so there is no reason not to treat yourself with some “me time”.
The dining options at The Countdown Hotel and the City of Dreams development are spectacularly impressive with countless Michelin-starred restaurants. We tried a sumptuous tasting menu at the two Michelin-starred, The Tasting Room with chef Fabrice Vulin and his philosophy of “la cuisine du terroir”. The dishes are exquisitely presented but it never feels overly pretentious such as the Provence “Les Cailloux Market” with farm fresh tomatoes, Mozzarella di Bufala and Focaccia.
The same can be said of their dim sum offerings at Jade Dragon. Steamed dumplings are shaped immaculately like a goldfish whilst only the very best ingredients are used like Iberico pork and Alaskan king crab meat.
With so many exciting developments, it's hard not to be impressed how a small fishing village (much like Hong Kong) has developed into a city of dreams.
