Summer makeup should be about glowing skin, with a natural sheen, illuminated and bronzed with pops of colours to accentuate our sun-kissed radiance.
Less is more approach suits summer make-up.
Wearing ridiculously heavy makeup in sweltering temperatures is uncool and will only melt off your face.
Begin with the basics: Use an oil-free moisturiser in the morning. Then layer on your sunscreen and UV protection. It needs to dry for full effectiveness, give it 20 mins to soak in.
Go sort of naked
If you’re a gal that needs some coverage think about mixing a bit of tinted moisturiser or foundation into your sunscreen and applying it that way. If you absolutely must. Go light and sheer – just become a sunnier version of yourself. Subtle enough to enhance your skin’s natural colour and makes you feel confident.
Next reach for your bronzer – and in a shade that looks like your natural tan. Dust it with a big brush on your eyelids, above your cheekbones, on the apples of your cheeks, forehead and chin. You can follow that with a little cream blush on your cheeks.
Don’t let make-up get in the way of taking a dip or even submerging fully (yes I am talking hair and all) into water, with water-proof makeup you will be smudge free and streak free.
The last thing to apply is waterproof mascara and a nice tinted lip balm with SPF. Low maintenance and offering a flush of colour while all the time softening and hydrating, it’s a perfect poolside companion – keep reapplying every 2 hours and you are good to go and don’t forget sunscreen.
Dive into your juicy fiction or gripping tell-all and relax.
Candid has your night time makeup look sorted aswell:
Maybe it’s the sangria, the afternoon Aperol spritz routine, the chianti, or the majestic backdrop which you just know will give selfie-evy to your friends but holiday night-time makeup looks can be a little more inventive and experimental. Until we sweat it all off! You did get a good shot in the best light though didn’t you?! Totally worth it.
Makeup trends this summer
Conceal don’t paint
Leave the foundation at home. Just dab your concealer where you need it, on the nose, under eyes and buff it in. We want to see those gorgeous freckles. Summer is the perfect opportunity to let your skin breathe a bit. A little dusting of bronzer should suffice and give adequate coverage and a sun-kissed veil.
Mix blusher with your highlighter to glow. Pat on your temples, even your forehead but especially your cheekbones. Ditch the powder blush during summer. Blush sticks, creams and gels are more effortless and laissez faire. A pinch of colour, a flush high on the cheeks is the way to go.
The window to your soul
Colour blocking the eyes is a real thing this year. Katie Jane Hughes – the instagram make-up-artist and my girl crush redefines experimentation in make up. You will become obsessed with her when you follow her too. She personally messages me back when I ask her questions – she is accessible, authentic and a real laugh. She puts playfulness back into make up. Her signature looks includes yellow swept over the eyelids with bright red coral lips (sounds crazy right?) coupled with cats eyes and dewy skin and makes it look … ta-da amazing – she also uses metallic eye gloss, another summer trend on the corners of the eye and in the centre of the eyelid. Katie always switches it up. Summer is the time to play with fun vibrant colours.
Coral is summery and vibrant. The perfect lippie for beach sunsets, azure waters and Mediterranean whitewashed everything.
This looks goes with paired back, clean makeup. A good tip for cool-based tones is to line the lips in red for a red coral – for a warm based tone and also really food for thin lips is to apply pinky nude lip liner and to finish a gloss over the top for a pout like no other.
How’s your brow game? The stand-out make up statement of 2019 is not going anywhere.
We love our brows! Draw on lots of individual hairs with a thin pencil that matches your colouring and secure with a really good brow gel. Summery, glossy, simple. Done.
Hello Vaseline, where have you been all my life?
So wear less, glow it up and play.
Dewiness is not always in our control but that elusive lit-from-within look can get a helping hand by none other that our friend Vaseline – petroleum jelly can give a summery model-ready glow when applied to the eyelids, cheeks, lips with or without make-up.
