Researching as far back as the '40s and '50s, Russell Athletic explores its ‘Ivy League’ heritage – focusing on the social rivalry between the jocks and the nerds. Candid's Thomas Falkenstedt finds the mix of athleisure-meets-normcore thrilling.
Russell Athletic was founded in 1902 in Alabama, USA and is known for being the inventor of the sweatshirt. It has carved a legacy for itself in both the sporting world and youth culture scene for over a hundred years. That gives them plenty of archives to dig in to and of course lifts one of the prime times in the history of Russell Athletic, the '90s.
For AW18, classic American sportswear label Russell Athletic reflects back on its collegiate heritage with a rework of on-campus signature classics. The AW18 collection re-introduces traditional American sporting designs including oversized mesh baseball shirts, hockey tops, and football tees all stamped with the iconic Eagle R logo. The collection is presented in a colour-mix of contrasting Cobalt, Cherry Tomato with Silver White and Navy Cosmos.
The unisex elements of the collection reflect the sports ‘team’ values that the brand shares through the presentation of a timeless snapshot of an era which was personified by the iconic American sports ‘team’ photo.
