The words ‘polarity' and ‘duality' get thrown around an awful lot in fashion these days. From day to night dressing and juxtaposed materials – it seems someone is always trying to reference duality. While many have attempted, few have succeeded in designing something truly dual.
Enter the ‘Polarity' sneaker from the SS17 collaboration between Amsterdam-based footwear brand, ETQ and luxury online retailer oki-ni.
ETQ is known for it's minimal aesthetic and signature chunky soled trainers in neutral colours. oki-ni is the online destination for cutting edge luxury, home to designers including Haider Ackermann, Raf Simons and Thom Browne.
The concept of the collaboration came after Christopher Fisher (Head Buyer at Oki-Ni), Hugo Castermans and Robin Engelen of ETQ spent a long night talking together about design, foreign cities and architecture.
The three met during Paris Fashion Week and spent the following evening discussing the concept of polarity against the backdrop of the Parisian cityscape.
From those conversations, the Polarity pack was born – two unique sneakers named, ‘negative' and ‘positive'.
As the name suggests the two sneakers are the exact opposite of each other, one black and one white, each with elevated details like 3M piping and a contrasting back heel.
Crafted from matte rubberised leather and reflective 3M strips, the shoes are a study in light vs dark and opposing forces. Despite having identical silhouettes and design, the two opposing styles are very different in feel.
Inspired by oki-ni's sleek online interface and ETQs minimalistic tendencies, the collaboration represents a special synergy between two like-minded brands.
The sneakers are available exclusively from 0ki-ni from 2 Dec 2016, they will retail for £215.
