Just as we thought we had our fix of summer anthems for this year, New Carnival have released a perfect late summer banger, Solid Gold. The latest offering from the indie-rock four piece is packed with attitude, swagger and a shimmering slice of, well, for lack of a better set of words, solid gold.
Hailing from Bristol, Max, Bertie, Olly and Billy are New Carnival. They made their first mark with their 2016 hit single Where Do You Wanna Go which garnered interest from Radio 1’s Annie Mac, who included the band in her ‘New Names’ feature. Since then they have gone on to create the smash Run For Cover, followed by an incredibly well-received mix tape, Funk Special Mix Tape featuring the slightly humourous Interview with Donald Trump and their super-funked up take on the Arctic Monkeys’ Arabella.
Back from a series of sell out headline shows in Manchester, Bristol and London’s Boston Music Rooms, New Carnival are back at it again with their latest tune Solid Gold. They have learned how to use their experimentation and risk taking to create a well balanced indie rock record, heavy on the high end and light on the low, alternating between funky restraint and stadium shimmer.
The song begins with an exultant bass and drum combination leading up to an exploding vocal melody. As the backing vocals drop out, lead singer Max Radford storms in with a glide of warm urban vocals to accompany the upbeat vibe. You can hear a bit of Coldplay’s Chris Martin mixed with the swagger and attitude of Kasabian’s Tom Meehan in the way Max delivers his lyrics. Max said, “Lyrically I was exploring the feelings you have in the embryonic stages of a relationship, feeling close to someone but also distant at the same time, and that urge to push things forward”.
The infectious chorus of this track will undoubtedly be the reason you will be playing it on repeat. It is catchy, uplifting and brilliantly melodic. And if that wasn’t enough, they have thrown in an explosive sing-along outro, that takes the single from breezy mid tempo beats to a heavy, inspiriting stadium anthem.
Though the release has been sumptuously produced by singer Max Radford, listening through headphones doesn’t seem to do it full justice. Solid Gold beckons to be heard live. You can catch New Carnival play at the London Omeara on the 21st September, be sure to check them out.
