Michal Skwarek is a Warsaw-based model and influencer who has a proclivity toward British designers, and after being told he was too short to be signed, said, “watch me now,” and has begun forging his own career. While it’s not an easy road to be a model, more so if you’re under a certain height, it can be done. There's a certain global icon from Croydon who, whilst being ten centimetres below the norm, has made it work for her. We talk to Michal about Vivienne Westwood, modern jazz and his signature accessory: funny socks.
How did you get into modelling?
It was just an impulse to make some test shoots for my portfolio. I have a friend who is a photographer, we talked and she has agreed to work with me.
What editorials have you been in?
I’ve been in ‘Big City Life’ by Marcin Ziembinski which everyone can see on Candid. Most of my shoots are used by photographers to complement their portoflios, I also take part in some art shoots. I have worked as a model for hairstylist, Paulina B?k. But one of my favorite editorials is ‘Pure,’ which was taken by Cezary Rucki. I love the simplicity and the truth of those images. My next editorials are awaiting to be published, so stay tuned!
You’re also a blogger. What kind of things do you like to write about?
It’s funny because I’ve created my blog very fast and on impulse. I don’t have enough time to write often. I work and I also have photo shoots. But I love writing about culture and entertainment. You can find something about film, cultural and fashion events. Pictures from the events are taken by me, I take pictures with Zenit.
Who is your favourite designer to wear and which designer would you most like to model for?
Definitley Vivienne Westwood. I love her work, style and her ecological activities. She is an icon. If I were to model for her I could rest in peace.
Aside from modelling, do you have any hobbies?
Yes, I love dancing. I started two years ago with modern jazz.
Any style tips for the autumn? What will you be wearing?
I have one tip. Be yourself, wear what you like. I love and have many jackets, most of them were bought in charity stores. Some of them are denim, faux leather, black and oversized. Every outfit I choose for autumn includes one of them. And of course I will be pairing them with colorful and crazy socks.
What’s your go-to accessory for making an outfit more exciting?
What kind of music are you listening to at the moment?
I love classical, jazz, pop and indie. And at this moment I’m in love with Petite Meller and Cigarettes After Sex.
Favourite film do date and why?
Hmm…The Help by Tate Taylor, because you can both laugh and cry watching this.
Are you working on any projects at the moment?
I’m working on an art project…More soon.
And finally, do you have a tip for aspiring models who might not be ‘conventional'?
Keep going, don’t give up, and stay gold! Okay maybe three tips…
