You might know that our Fashion Editor, Thomas Falkenstedt, is also a history nerd. That's why he's excited when history meets contemporary fashion. He takes a look at the Grenfell SS18 collection, which combines the best of both the company's heritage as well as where they stand now.
Established in 1923, Grenfell began as a ‘wonder-fabric’ developed specifically to meet the outerwear needs of explorer and missionary doctor, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, who lent his name to the brand. Over the following decades as Grenfell developed a wider range of outerwear in many different styles and fabrics, Grenfell was worn by British Royalty, legends of motorsports, mountaineers, adventurers, outdoorsmen and style icons including Cary Grant and Gregory Peck.
Their clothing has been worn by some of the fastest men on the planet. Sir Stirling Moss drove for years in Grenfell Cloth and the brand is also associated with Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell MBE, who wore the brand's racing suits whilst setting records on both land and water.
The Grenfell SS18 collection is inspired by adventurous and active holiday experiences, including cycling and trekking. Grenfell has always been about travel and ease of movement – which is their raison d’etre – but this collection sweeps me away both to beaches as well as mountains, but mind you, I am by no means an outdoorsy person.
Grenfell has blended the demands of these activities with a British sense of functionality and appropriateness, mixed with a little eccentricity. Each collection piece is designed to work from town to country, in all weathers and across all age groups.
Key pieces include The Blencathra, a light, travel blazer combining open-weave wool with a water-repellent, breathable metallic-coated linen to produce a stylish hybrid. It is an easy-care, go-anywhere blazer/anorak that is a totally unique, functional and versatile.
Following in the same spirit is the Skiddaw Backpack Jacket. A zip- fronted garment in a breathable, nylon technical fabric, created for military use, it incorporates a fully-functional backpack complete with internal shoulder straps to support any weight carried. It can be zipped away into its own pouch when needed. Continuing the theme is the Bowfell Jacket, a short hooded parka with built-in pouch/bum bag for extra storage capacity.
These are examples of a collection designed for travel storage and protection, not to mention great style. There's more to collection than that: other parkas, elegant riding coats (with leg straps), plus other multi-pocketed field and safari coats, equip you for exploration and adventure.
Alongside the new, standing sure and steadfastly, are their perennial classics in the form of coats, trenches, shooting and golfing pieces. The cornerstones of the brand are realised in a range of colours; including Yves Klein electric blue, metallic silver, plus various shades of navy, biscuit and Bluebird blue makes it quite irresistible.
All these wondrous Grenfell SS18 pieces can be found on their website.
