We all love the vibrant, carnival spirit of the Brazilians, so what better way to celebrate than sharing a cocktail or two on International Cachaça Day. It is a common misconception that people think of cachaça as Brazilian rum when this versatile spirit was invented over a century before rum came into existence.
Cachaça is distilled from fresh cane juice that only comes from Brazil. The popularity of the caipirinha has made cachaça, the third most consumed spirit in the world. There are gradually more artisanal, premium cachaça brands popping up in the UK markets. The latest to launch is ZECA Cachaça, which is produced in what is often referred to as the Champagne region for cachaça production: Zona Da Mata in Minas Gerais. This region is well-known for their gemstone production as well as their natural inhabitants, such as the Tamandua anteaters, which are natural pest controllers used in the process of making the spirit and the animal makes a prominent appearance in the design of the bottle.
They only use traditional methods in handcrafting ZECA Cachaça. It is distilled in old alambiques directly using once-pressed sugar canes and at a high attitude. The process has been perfected for over 100 years on the Matos family estate. Terrior hasn't been discussed much when it comes to cachaça but ZECA has a gentle sweetness accompanied by hints of cut grass and green apples. It is fruitier than some cachaças and it is enlivened by a bold, white peppery spice kick as an aftertaste.
There are two cocktail recipes we recommend trying:
Passion Fruit Caipirinha
1 Passion Fruit
2 Tablespoons White Sugar
50ml ZECA Cachaça
Muddle the lime wedges and sugar in a cocktail shaker until most of the sugar has dissolved. Add the cachaça and the pulp from the passion fruit. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 1 minute. Pour into a glass and garnish with a lime wedge and some passion fruit pulp.
Rio Roma Rose
200ml Rose Lemonade (preferably Fentimans)
50ml ZECA Cachaça
A delicious and refreshing summer drink blending Brazil with Italy and England. Place several ice cubes into a glass and pour over ZECA cachaça. Top up with Rose Lemonade and a light splash of Campari to finish. Squeeze juice from a lime wedge into the glass before dropping it in.
