CBD Oil for Sports & Weight Loss

17th August 2020

New research shows that CBD could reduce food intake and boost metabolism. In addition, this could promote the healthy loss of fat.

Could this mean that CBD is a performance-enhancing drug for athletes?

CBD & Significant Fat Reduction

In preliminary research obtained from a two-week study, significant reductions were shown in the bodyweight of rats.

In the study, rats were injected with CBD every day with doses of between 1.1 and 2.3 mg per pound of body weight (2.5 and 5 mg per kg).

Both doses were found to produce significant reductions in body weight. However, the higher dose had the most pronounced and noticeable effect.

Two Types of Fat – White & Brown

Did you know your body has two types of fat?

White fat and brown fat are the two kinds of fat that exist in your body.

White Fat

White fat is the most prevalent form and it is responsible for storing and supplying energy. At the same time, it also insulates and cushions your organs.

Found in excess though it is responsible for chronic illnesses and conditions. These include among others diabetes and heart disease.

Brown Fat

Brown fat is responsible for burning calories by generating heat. Where a person has a healthier weight they tend to have a higher percentage of brown fat than overweight people

Converting White to Brown

You can actually convert the two different types of fat. No, really.

There are a number of ways you can do this.

It’s possible to change white fat to brown through exercise, adequate sleeping time, and exposing yourself to colder temperatures

A test-tube study found that CBD led to “browning” in white fat cells and enhanced the expression of specific genes and proteins that promote brown fat.

Does CBD Promote Weight Loss?

These preliminary studies show that CBD may, in fact, promote weight loss.

But How?

It does this by reducing appetite, boosting metabolism, and encouraging the “browning” of fat cells.

It should be noted though that at this time research is still limited. While these tests with rats were exciting and could yield big results, more human studies are needed.

Is CBD a Performance Enhancer?

At the moment there is no evidence that CBD has performance-enhancing properties. For that reason, it does not contravene the regulations of the World Anti-Doping Association.

As of 2018, the WADA removed CBD from the list of prohibited substances – in or out of competition – and the US Anti-Doping Agency did likewise.

However, THC is still included as a banned substance.

Because these two cannabinoids (CBD, THC) are so close in relation, people still ask the question, “Is CBD a performance enhancer?”

Athlete Stress and CBD

It’s no secret that athletes put a lot of stress on their bodies.

Training may stimulate adaptation and increase performance, however physical trauma and prolonged wear and tear will eventually lead to injuries and pain.

Current methods of pain management are effective, that’s why they’ve been used for so long. But they’re also dangerous.

Many common pain management treatments kill people. It sounds almost hysterical to say but over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and naproxen sodium are incredibly dangerous.

To improve recovery post-training and provide a safer form of pain relief is CBD the answer? Many athletes are already exploring the use of cannabidiol or CBD for athletes. Some say that means it is enhancing their performance but the jury is still out and WADA says differently.

For now, at least CBD oil can be seen as a useful supplement for athletes recovering from injury and pain relief. Particularly in the case of musculoskeletal pain.
