Amesh Wijeseker lit up Fashion Scout this week with his collection of looks for both men and women. Those watching from the benches alongside the catwalk shouldn’t have been surprised that the London-born graduate of The Academy of Design Sri Lanka was set to wow us. Having worked with Future Labs, Zandra Rhodes and Edeline Lee, on his way to picking up the Oracle International Award at Graduate Fashion Week 2016, I’d been sure to pencil him in as a must-see.
Amesh has partnered with luxury sustainable lifestyle label SRI (launching in 2018) for the collection and hints of Sri Lanka run through the looks. Local production crafts have been blended with urban looks to produce a series of garments that fit together with their fun, fresh sense of both masculine and unisex fashion trends.
Bright prints lift the underlying natural tones and darker elements of the looks and the planned slouching of the knitwear adds a relaxed spring-to-early-summer feel to the whole range. I particularly enjoyed the sleeveless sweater, which has notes to the collegiate themes we’ve seen recently. And as a huge cricket fan, the summer tradition in both London and Colombo of bat on ball at the wicket, sparked memories. I was also delighted (and I’m a notorious grump) by the green jacket and trousers fluted with the red floral print.
There was a clear youthful energy to the collection and I can’t wait to see how Amesh’s vision as a designer develops. He’s definitively on my ones-to-watch list.
