5 Hemp Protein Balls That You Didn’t Know You Needed

2nd August 2021

There are so many different ways to take CBD – that’s probably one of the best things about it (besides all of the amazing potential benefits, of course). This is especially true if you have a bit of a flare for the culinary arts! CBD cooking is a really fun, delicious way of getting your daily dose, whilst getting creative in the kitchen. But why stop there? Why not double up your CBD recipes, and boost your protein while you’re at it? We’re talking about hemp protein balls!

Hemp protein balls, energy bites, power balls, whatever you want to call them, are an amazingly nutritious snack that you can make at home!

There are plenty of CBD retailers that offer these CBD-infused snacks though, so why should I make them myself? Of course, you can buy hemp protein balls from reputable CBD suppliers, but where’s the fun in that?

Making your own hemp protein balls at home means you can completely customise the recipe to your individual needs and preferences. Everybody is different and therefore, CBD will affect us all differently. Additionally, we all have different desired effects. So, making your own CBD-infused snacks means that you can tailor the dosage to your own needs.

You can tailor the recipe to your own personal tastes too! One of the other benefits of making your own hemp protein balls is that you can experiment. You can chop and change recipes to suit what you have available, or you can try new things. The best part? You get to eat all the experiments!

Why Take CBD Edibles?

As you know, there are many different ways to take CBD, so why should you opt for edibles? It will totally depend on your personal needs and preferences. Edibles, although delicious, won’t suit some people as they will prefer other forms of CBD, like capsules or tinctures.

When we ingest CBD, it is slowly and steadily released into our bloodstream. Because the substance has to go through our digestive system before it reaches the bloodstream, it can take a while to kick in. This means you won’t “feel” the effects of CBD immediately, like other forms of CBD. Conversely, you’ll have a slower release that lasts for a number of hours.

CBD Edibles

When we take CBD sublingually (by placing a drop under the tongue), we absorb it quickly as it goes directly to the bloodstream via membranes in our mouths. In this case, we generally feel the effects within 15-20 minutes. However, the effects won’t typically last more than 2 hours.

On the other hand, when we take CBD edibles, it is digested over the course of a few hours, slowly making its way into the bloodstream. Therefore, you can enjoy the effects for up to 8 hours.

Edibles are the perfect choice for someone who wants to enjoy the effects over the course of the day, without having to worry about topping it up. They’re also much more discreet than smoking or vaping dry hemp herb as these forms have a very distinctive smell. Tinctures are also discreet but you will need to top up throughout the day, which might not suit some people.

One of the easiest ways of getting a slow release of CBD is to infuse the substance into snacks, that you can enjoy at any time of the day. Protein balls are an amazing candidate for infusion because they’re quick and easy to make. None of our recipes requires cooking, hard to find ingredients, or fancy equipment. You probably already have everything you need in your larder!

Protein balls usually use fat or oil to bind them together, which also lends itself to CBD infusion. CBD is a fat-soluble compound so when you ingest it alongside other fats or oils, your body absorbs it more easily. Meaning you get the most out of your hemp protein balls!

Hemp Protein Balls Or Energy Balls?

Don’t worry, you don’t need to choose between the two. Hemp protein balls and hemp energy balls are the same thing. We need protein-based foods for energy! In a nutshell, protein gives our bodies fuel to function normally. Equally, we need protein to repair and build muscles and tissues. This includes your hair, nails, and skin – so you won’t just feel healthy, you’ll look healthy too!

Our bodies break down protein much slower than carbohydrates, so not only does it keep us feeling full for longer, but it also provides us with a longer-lasting source of energy. Hemp protein powder balls are also an excellent way of combining CBD with other nutritious super-foods. This means that you can get your daily dose of CBD whilst boosting your protein and vitamin intake! What’s not to love?

Hemp Protein Balls Recipe – Pro Tips

Before we get our hands dirty making our protein bites, we have some top tips that will make the whole process much easier.

Firstly, you should arm yourself with an ice cream scoop, when dividing your protein ball mixture. Using an ice cream scoop means that each portion is uniform and already in a ball-like shape. If you don’t have an ice cream scoop, but you want to make sure each ball is the same size, you can simply measure the mixture on a kitchen scale. We recommend dividing them equally to ensure each has roughly the same amount of protein and CBD in them.

Secondly, forming the hemp protein balls and be a sticky business. But applying a small amount of water or oil to your hands before you dive in can make all the difference. Oiling your hands will keep the mixture from getting stuck to you, and it will moisturise your skin whilst you cook – it’s a win-win!

Not all protein powders were created equally, and the same can be said for nut butters. If you find that your hemp protein balls are dry or crumbling, you can simply add a couple of drops of water, plant milk or oil. This will help to bind the mixture, keeping everything held together. Add a tiny amount at a time to avoid overdoing it. You can always add more, but you cannot add less.

Let’s Get Stuck In

We have created these recipes using ingredients that we have in the local supermarket, or in our kitchens already. Similarly, you won’t need any fancy equipment. Most of our recipes will either require a mixing bowl or a food processor, but that’s it.

You will also need an airtight, large container to store your hemp protein balls in. None of our recipes requires baking or cooking, but the protein bites will need to be kept in the fridge.

Recipe #1 Reeses Pieces Protein Balls

For our Reeses Pieces Protein Balls, you will need CBD-infused protein powder. We particularly recommend this one as it is vegetarian-friendly and made from natural ingredients.

You will need:

  • 2 scoops of chocolate CBD-infused protein powder
  • 2 tbsp chocolate chips
  • 1 ½ cups rolled oats
  • ¼ cup honey/ agave nectar
  • 1 cup peanut butter

How to make them:

  1. When you have all of your ingredients measured out, you can add everything to your food processor. You can either use the blade attachment or a dough hook attachment to combine all of the ingredients – the choice is yours.
  2. Blend all of the ingredients together for a couple of minutes.
  3. When everything is thoroughly mixed, you can start scooping.
  4. Using your ice cream scoop, divide the mixture into even portions.
  5. Next, you can apply some oil to your hands, and get rolling. Place a portion in one palm, and gently roll it into a ball by moving your hands in circular motions, keeping the ball between your palms.
  6. You should have approximately 8 round hemp protein peanut butter balls, it will depend on the size of your scoop.
  7. When they’re ready, you can place them into your container and chill in the fridge for 1-2 hours before serving.

If you keep the chocolate hemp protein balls in the fridge, they should last for about a week. This means that they’re a great snack to batch make at the beginning of the week. You can have them in the fridge, ready and waiting, should the urge to snack arise.

Recipe #2 Bounty Bar Protein Bites

If you’re a fan of the classic Bounty Bar, you are going to love these hemp protein energy balls. For this recipe, we have used dates to add a natural sweetness to the bites, without ramping up your sugar intake. Dates are also a great source of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin K.
You will need:

  • 50 g almonds
  • 40 g cacao powder
  • 50 g pumpkin seeds
  • 4 ml CBD oil (we love this one)
  • 1 – 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 100 g dates, pitted
  • Desiccated coconut, to decorate

How to make them:

  1. Grab your food processor and pop in the blade attachment. Add the almonds and pumpkin seeds. You will need to blitz these for a couple of seconds so that they’re broken up. We don’t need them to be a powder, just a chunky consistency.
  2. Next, you can pop in the dates, half of the coconut oil, and cacao powder, blending everything together.
  3. Then, you can add the rest of the coconut oil and CBD oil of your choice.
  4. When everything is nicely combined, you can use the ice cream scoop to divide up the mixture into equal portions.
  5. Using the same method as before, you can lightly oil your hands, and roll the portions into small balls.
  6. Pour the desiccated coconut onto a plate, and roll the hemp protein balls in it until they are completely covered.
  7. Looking good! Now, pop them into a container and chill in the fridge for an hour or two before serving.

Recipe #3 Hemp Almond Truffles

These hemp protein balls are the perfect treat for those of us with a sweet tooth – it’s hard to believe that they’re so healthy, yet so tasty!

You will need:

  • 4 ml CBD oil
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 5 tbsp ground almonds
  • 2 tbsp ground flax seeds
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground almond, for decorating

How to make them:

  1. For this recipe, we have opted for ground flax seeds and almonds, so you won’t need to grind them at home. However, if you can’t find ground ones, you can just grind them yourself with a mortar, pestle, and some elbow grease. Alternatively, you can use the high power option of your food processor.
  2. Pop all of the ingredients into a big mixing bowl and get mixing! We find it easier to use the back of a metal spoon to mix everything together. Simply squish everything in a downward motion to form a paste-like consistency. (That doesn’t sound very appealing but it’s the best way to describe it – sorry!)
  3. When you have everything thoroughly mixed, you can scoop the portions with the ice cream scoop.
  4. How many hemp protein balls you make is totally up to you – if you find that an ice creams scoop is too big, simply use a spoon! This recipe should make approximately 8 portions.
  5. Using a circular motion, roll the balls between your palms. When they’re round, you can place the extra ground almond on a plate, rolling the protein bites in it until they’re covered.
  6. When they’re ready to go, place them in a container and chill in the fridge for a couple of hours.

Recipe #4 Cookie Dough Balls

Who doesn’t love cookie dough? Well, this recipe allows you to enjoy the taste of cookie dough, the benefits of CBD, and boost your protein intake. Amazing!

For this recipe, you will need:

  • ⅓ cup ground almonds
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 2 scoops CBD-infused protein powder
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1 cup desiccated coconut

How to make them:

  1. Grab a large mixing bowl and add in the ground almonds, protein powder, and the desiccated coconut.
  2. Mix all of these dry ingredients together, before adding the maple coconut oil and syrup.
  3. Give everything a good mix to make sure everything is incorporated, before adding the chocolate chips. This may take a little bit of elbow grease!
  4. Using parchment paper, line a large container or baking tray.
  5. With an ice cream scoop, split the mixture into equal portions.
  6. And, just like before, you’re going to roll the balls up, between your palms.
  7. Place the hemp protein balls on the tray and pop them into the fridge. They’ll last for about a week (if you can resist eating them before then!).

Recipe #5 CBD Cinnabon Bites

Cinnamon rolls are sticky, squishy balls of deliciousness that remind us of lazy autumn afternoon strolls. But why not give yourself a taste of this traditional treat, year-round? Of course, while these cinnamon roll-inspired hemp protein balls are significantly healthier, they have the same distinctive flavours, to give your tastebuds a thrill!

For this recipe, you will need:

  • ⅓ cup chopped hazelnuts
  • 3 tbsp agave nectar
  • 1 scoop CBD protein powder
  • ⅓ cup ground almonds
  • ½ cup cashew butter
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ⅛ tsp vanilla extract

How to make them:

  1. Chuck the cashew butter, vanilla extract, and agave nectar into your food processor, and blend until everything is nicely combined.
  2. Next, you can add cinnamon, CBD-infused protein powder, and ground almonds.
  3. Blitz everything for a couple of minutes to make sure that they’re thoroughly mixed.
  4. When you’re happy with the consistency, you can throw in the hazelnuts.
  5. Pulse the food processor a couple of times to make sure the hazelnuts are mixed in. Be careful not to over-blend or you’ll lose the hazelnut chunks!
  6. Separate out your hemp protein balls using a large spoon, or ice cream scoop.
  7. Roll ‘em up! When you have all of the portions rolled into neat balls, you can add ½ tsp cinnamon and another ½ scoop of protein powder onto a plate. Mix them together and roll the balls in it to evenly coat them.
  8. Place the protein bites into an airtight container and store them in the fridge. Let them sit for about an hour or two before serving for the best texture.
